Chapter 2 summary: In Search of Home
"The Other" Wes
Wes's brother Tony lived with his father in a very dirty, dangerous, and drug filled area. Tony was six years older than Wes, and was very protective of him. Even at a young age, Tony had already built up a fierce reputation as a drug dealer, and he hoped that Wes would make better choices than him. Wes had a good friend named Woody, and together they played football. Being good at sports was what mattered to Wes, so he never put any time into school and grades declined. One day, an argument started while playing football, and it ended with Wes being punched in the face. Wes then ignored any sense of reason, and marched home to grab a knife even though he knew Tony wouldn't want him to do this. All he could see was red. He started marching back to the boy who punched him with knife in hand, and only focused on him, he didn't even notice the police officers that had arrived until they tackled him to the ground. Both Wes and Woody were arrested that day, but instead of calling his mother, Wes called Tony's father to get him out of jail. It was not until years later that Mary found out Tony was arrested that day.
Wes (author)
Joy did not take the death of her husband well. Her parents offered to take both Joy and her three children inside of their home in the Bronx. Joy knew best and decided to take this offer. Wes soon discovered that his grandparent's rules were stricter than his mother's. He decided to go outside where there was a basketball court to try and meet new people. The people who played at this basketball court were better and bigger than Wes, but he didn't care. He stayed and made new friends.
