Chapter 3 summary: Foreign Ground
Wes (author)
Wes' mother had decided to move her children to a private school, which happened to be an "all white" school. Wes becomes friends with Justin, the only other black kid at their school.
Although he left switched schools, Wes still remanded friends with kids from his old school, who lived in his neighborhood, while making friends with some in his new school. Wes's uncle Howard advised him to invite friends from his neighborhood and friends from his new school to play a game of baseball. But the game only lasted a few innings because disagreements and fist fights were conjured up between the two groups.
Wes believe that he was in somewhat of a dilemma with being friends with the kids from school and the kids from his neighborhood. His mother threaten to send Wes to military school if his grade were to slip. But he didn't believe her. Justin, who was somewhat had same circumstances as Wes, was one of the top-performing students.
"The Other" Wes
Mary and Wes had moved to Baltimore County after Tony was shot and Wes failed the sixth grade. Although Wes knew Tony was deep into the drug game and what he was doing to receive money was wrong, it didn't stop him from taking notice of the nice things he could buy.
One day, Wes was a kid on the street wearing a headset which caught his eye. When he asked where he could get said object, the kid explained that to get one all he had to do was wear it, and whenever the cops would come by, he would have to speak into it and then he would get paid. And with no questions asked, Wes agreed to do so.
Wes tried marijuana when he skipped school, stole his mother's stash and shared it with him friends.
